The sole criterion for acceptance into the network is the intent to donate a significant amount to existential risk reduction efforts. To specify quantitatively, this is around 5% of income and upwards. Some donate more and some donate relatively less, but members will not be pressured into feeling they need to donate greater amounts. Neither will members be pressured to support any particular organization. As a matter of human psychology, if trying to maximize our long term impact, it is unwise to donate everything not required for subsistence. Ultimately, if you choose to donate greater amounts it will be because you value making a difference against existential risk, not because other people said you ought to. Additionally, this network is not intended for discussion of the most important existential risks, or where members can make the most difference. While discussion of topics not related to careers is certainly acceptable between members, please carry on such conversations elsewhere, not in this group's discussions. However, members must be willing to support the careers of those who donate to different organizations than themselves, and be supported in return. A difference of opinion on how best to contribute to existential risk reduction is a technical disagreement, not ground for in-group/out-group dichotomies. If you do not feel you will be able to support those with different donation strategies, please do not apply. In providing invitations, we look for evidence of interest in existential risk reduction. If you know others who are involved in such efforts or have written previously on such topics, including through informal writing such as blog commenting, please let us know. If not, let us know as well, and we'll be happy to set up a casual conversation to discern interest. If you're genuinely interested in reducing existential risk and have been looking into these topics for some time, obtaining an invitation should not be difficult. Please send all requests for invitations to contact@xrisknetwork.com. |
